Battery Care: Keep It Healthy for the Long Run

Your battery is the heart of your EV, so let’s keep it in top shape!

  • Weekly Full Charge: Plug in for a full charge at least once a week. This keeps your Battery Management System (BMS) calibrated and ensures accurate range estimates, especially after long periods of inactivity.
  • Deep Discharge Every 3 or 6 Months: Let the battery run down below 10% and then charge it back to 100%. This helps the BMS balance the cells and maintain long-term accuracy.

Pro Tip: This advice applies to most EVs with LFP battery technology. Keeping your battery well-maintained ensures longevity and performance.

Tire Pressure: Small Details, Big Impact

Tire pressure might seem minor, but it makes a huge difference in range and driving comfort, no matter what EV you drive!

  • Ideal Pressure: Check the label inside your driver’s door frame for the recommended pressure. If it’s missing, aim for 250 kPa (~2.5 bar or ~36 psi).
  • Expert Range: The manual suggests 2.3-2.5 bar (~33-36 psi), depending on your load and tire specs. Always check your tires cold and aim for a monthly inspection.
  • Smooth Driving: Using Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) helps maintain an even speed. In the Netherlands, I usually cruise at 105 km/h for optimal efficiency. You’ll notice a significantly higher battery consumption when driving speeds above 115 km/h.

Why it matters: Proper tire pressure reduces rolling resistance, which improves range for all EVs.

Fast-Charging: Charge Smart, Save Time

Fast-charging is a game-changer, but there’s a sweet spot to make the most of it, and this applies to every EV!

  • The 80% Rule: Charging speeds are fastest up to 80% State of Charge (SOC). Beyond that, the speed slows down significantly.
  • EV Etiquette: Unplug once you hit 80% to free up the charger for others. It’s a small act that keeps public charging stations running smoothly for everyone.

Why it matters: Fast-charging behavior affects all EVs, and following these tips helps everyone charge efficiently.

Climate System & Voice Control: Comfort Meets Safety

The Atto 3’s climate system can be a bit hit or miss, but with the right settings, and the help of the BYD voice assistant, you can stay comfortable without taking your hands off the wheel or your eyes off the road.

  • Summer Cooling: If you want a cooler cabin, set the system to Eco mode. It balances energy use and comfort, helping to preserve your range.
  • Winter Warmth: For colder months, switch to Comfort mode. It uses a bit more power but ensures the cabin warms up quickly, perfect for chilly mornings.
  • Future Updates: Keep an eye out for OTA updates. BYD often refines features, and the climate system might see improvements in future software versions.

Voice Control for Safety

For a safer and more convenient experience, use the BYD voice assistant to adjust settings hands-free. Simply say:

  • “Hi BYD, change temperature to 23 degrees” to set your ideal climate.
  • “Hi BYD, open the sunroof” to let in some fresh air or sunlight.

This way, you can keep your focus on the road while staying comfortable.

Real-Life EV Tips from the Road

Trip to Nordhorn

Starting at 95% SOC, the Atto 3 delivered almost exactly what A Better Routeplanner (ABRP) estimated. A quick 19-minute stop at Fastned got us to 88% SOC, just enough time to enjoy dinner and hit the road again. Efficient and stress-free! 🔗 Read the full story here

Adventure to Denmark

  • Fastned in the Netherlands was reliable as always.
  • Once in Germany and Denmark, Ionity stole the show with seamless 350 kW chargers.
  • Pro Tip: The Ionity Power subscription slashed charging costs from €0.71 to €0.39/kWh, a huge saving on long trips!
  • Bonus: The Clever station in Denmark offered coffee, comfy seating, and charging. 🔗 Read the full story here
